Nara was written for the ancient city of Nara, Japan - in particular, the famous To-da-ji Temple. I spent countless days visiting Nara while I lived in Japan and it was an experience that has shaped my character and consequently my music. The piece begins solo trombone which represents the single monk who wakes before dawn to open the temple doors. A tranquil time of morning to be soon followed by a rush of sunlight bleeding into the temple district which is represented by the rest of the ensemble. Pt 2 symbolizes the rush of frantic tourism that attracts the famous deer (messengers of god). In daytime, Nara becomes a national tourist attraction. The remainder of the piece aims to soundtrack a day in Nara.
